Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah, part of Allah's command to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), means 'And keep watch over them, for soon they will see (the consequences of their deeds).' According to classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this is an instruction for the Prophet to observe the disbelievers patiently, as Allah will soon make manifest to them the truth of His message and the consequences of their rejection. The ayah conveys both a command for patience and an assurance that divine justice will ultimately be evident to all.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah As-Saffat, a Meccan surah that emphasizes Allah's power, the certainty of the Day of Judgment, and the fate of those who reject the message. The broader context addresses the mockers and deniers of Mecca who ridiculed the Prophet, and this verse reassures him that their final outcome will vindicate the truth of his message.
Related Hadiths
While no hadith directly quotes this verse, Sahih Bukhari contains numerous hadiths about the Prophet's patience with disbelievers, such as the account of his persecution in Taif, demonstrating the virtue of steadfastness described in this ayah.
