Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah marks the moment when Allah commended Prophet Ibrahim for fulfilling the divine test of sacrificing his son Ismail, declaring that he had validated the vision. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that this response signifies Allah's acceptance of Ibrahim's obedience and willingness, and establishes the principle that sincere obedience and ihsan (excellence) are rewarded by Allah. The ayah demonstrates that true success lies not merely in the completion of an act, but in the sincerity of intention and submission to the Divine will.
Revelation Context
This ayah occurs within the narrative of Ibrahim's sacrifice (Dhabih) in Surah As-Saffat (37:102-111). It is set in the context of the Meccan period and addresses the trial of Prophet Ibrahim, one of Islam's foundational stories emphasizing absolute trust in Allah's commands. The ayah directly follows Allah's intervention to replace Ismail with a ram, affirming that the test was specifically about Ibrahim's willingness and faithfulness rather than the actual sacrifice itself.
Related Hadiths
Sahih Bukhari (3371): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have mentioned the trials of the prophets, with Ibrahim's sacrifice being among the greatest tests of faith. Additionally, Sahih Muslim contains traditions about the virtue of obedience to Allah's commands even when they appear difficult.
