Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah gave glad tidings to Ibrahim (Abraham) of a son who would be characterized by forbearance, gentleness, and patience—referring to Ismail. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that 'halim' (حليم) denotes not merely patience but a noble character trait combining forbearance with wisdom, qualities that would define Ismail throughout his life, particularly in his obedience during the trial of sacrifice.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the context of Surah As-Saffat's discussion of Ibrahim's station and trials. It follows the narrative of Allah's promise to Ibrahim despite his advanced age and his wife's barrenness. The surah, revealed in Mecca, emphasizes the righteousness of the prophets and their constancy in faith, with Ibrahim's story serving as a central example of unwavering devotion.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said regarding Ismail: 'The best of you are those with the best character' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1162). Additionally, there are reports in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim regarding Ibrahim's sacrifice and Ismail's willing obedience, exemplifying the 'halim' quality mentioned here.
