Ar-Rum · Ayah 8

Translations

Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allāh has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers.

Transliteration

Awalam yatafakkaroo fee anfusihim, ma khalaqa Allahu as-samawati wal-arda wa ma baynahuma illa bil-haqqi wa ajalin musammah, wa inna katheeran mina an-nasi biliqai rabbihim lakafiroon.

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah calls believers to reflect deeply within themselves upon the creation of the heavens, earth, and all that exists between them, which Allah created with perfect truth and purpose, each with an appointed term. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, despite these clear signs of divine creation and wisdom, many people deny the meeting with their Lord (resurrection and the afterlife), rejecting accountability before God. The ayah emphasizes that rational reflection on creation should naturally lead to belief in God's Oneness and the certainty of the Day of Judgment.

Revelation Context

This surah was revealed in Mecca during the period of intense polytheistic opposition to Prophet Muhammad's message. The surah's broader context addresses the Signs of Allah evident in creation and history, particularly the fall of the Roman and Persian empires, encouraging believers to recognize divine patterns and trust in God's plan despite the mockery of disbelievers.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, 'Reflect upon the creation of Allah, but do not reflect upon the essence of Allah, for you will never be able to comprehend Him' (Sunan Ibn Majah). Additionally, the hadith on the seven heavens emphasizes contemplation of creation (Sahih Bukhari 3191), which aligns with this ayah's call to reflection (tafakkur).

Key Lesson

Believers are encouraged to engage in deep personal reflection about the universe and existence as a pathway to strengthening faith and recognizing God's wisdom, while understanding that disbelief in the afterlife stems from a failure to truly contemplate creation. This practice of mindful observation of the natural world remains a powerful spiritual discipline that connects us to our Creator and reminds us of our ultimate accountability before Him.
