Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah commands the Prophet (peace be upon him) to be patient, affirming that Allah's promise is true and will certainly come to pass. The verse also instructs him not to be swayed or made light of by those who lack faith and certainty in Allah's signs. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that this patience is specifically regarding the eventual victory of Islam and the fulfillment of Allah's promises, while Al-Qurtubi notes that the disbelievers' mockery should not diminish the Prophet's conviction.

Revelation Context

Surah Ar-Rum was revealed during the Meccan period when the Prophet faced significant opposition and ridicule from polytheists. This ayah comes in the context of the surah's discussion of Allah's signs in creation and history, particularly referencing the Byzantine-Persian wars. The ayah serves to strengthen the Prophet's resolve during a time of persecution and to reassure him of the ultimate triumph of the Islamic message.
