Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the Day of Judgment when the trumpet (Sûr) is blown, causing terror to all creation in the heavens and earth except those whom Allah wills to protect. Ibn Kathir explains that this refers to Israfeel's second blowing of the trumpet, which will cause death and devastation, followed by the third blowing which will resurrect all souls. Al-Qurtubi notes that those excepted (illa man sha'a Allah) are understood to be the angels and the righteous believers whose hearts Allah has fortified against fear.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah An-Naml, a Meccan chapter that frequently addresses themes of the Last Day and divine power. It is part of a broader passage (27:80-87) dealing with the Day of Resurrection and serves to remind the Meccan polytheists of the inevitable reality of the Hereafter and their accountability before Allah.
