Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah commands the believers to obey Allah and His Messenger as a means to attain His mercy and forgiveness. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that obedience to Allah and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the fundamental condition for receiving divine mercy (rahmah), and that such obedience encompasses following the Quran and the Sunnah in all matters of life. The phrase 'la'allakum' (perhaps, so that) indicates that obedience is the pathway to hope for Allah's compassion and salvation.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the context of Surah Ali 'Imran (Chapter 3), a Medinan surah that addresses the Muslim community on matters of faith, governance, and ethical conduct. It follows discussions about the battle of Badr and other early Islamic events, serving as a general principle of obedience applicable to the growing Muslim community in Medina.
Related Hadiths
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever obeys me has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys me has disobeyed Allah' (Sahih Bukhari 7137). Additionally, 'The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it' (Sahih Bukhari 5027), emphasizing the importance of understanding and following the divine guidance.
