Al-Waqi'ah · Ayah 93

فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ 93

Translations

Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water

Transliteration

Fa-nuzulun min hamim

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes a drink of boiling water that will be given to the inhabitants of Hell as punishment. The word 'nuzul' (نزل) refers to hospitality or provision, used here with bitter irony—the only 'hospitality' the deniers will receive in the afterlife is scalding water. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir emphasize that this boiling water (hamim) will be poured over them, burning their insides and outsides, as mentioned in other Quranic passages (22:20).

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the final section of Surah Al-Waqi'ah, which describes the Day of Judgment and the states of three categories of people: the foremost (as-sabiqun), the companions of the right hand (ashab al-yameen), and the companions of the left hand (ashab ash-shimal). This specific verse details the fate of those in the left group—the disbelievers—emphasizing the certainty and severity of divine punishment.

Related Hadiths

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said regarding the people of Hell: 'The least punishment of the people of Hell will be sandals of fire which will boil the brain of a person just as water boils a cooking pot' (Sahih Muslim 2850). Additionally, the Quran mentions in Surah Al-Hajj (22:20) a similar punishment: 'Boiling water will be poured over their heads, melting their skins and whatever is in their bellies.'
