This ayah presents a greeting of peace (salām) extended to the person being addressed from the people of the right hand (asḥāb al-yamīn), referring to the blessed inhabitants of Paradise. According to classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir, this salutation represents the ultimate honor and acceptance from the righteous believers in the afterlife, symbolizing harmony, blessing, and divine favor bestowed upon those who attain Paradise.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the context of Surah Al-Waqi'ah, which describes the Day of Judgment and the division of humanity into three categories. Verse 56:91 is part of the concluding section addressing the blessed state of the people of the right hand (the saved believers), contrasting with those of the left hand (the condemned). The surah was revealed in Mecca to prepare believers for the certainty of the afterlife and divine justice.

Additionally, the greeting of salām itself is emphasized in the hadith: 'You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not guide you to a thing which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salām among yourselves' (Sahih Muslim 54).
