ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ 64

Translations

Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?

Transliteration

A-antum tazra'oonahu am nahnu az-zari'oon

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah poses a rhetorical question to humanity, asking whether they themselves cause the grain to grow or if it is Allah who causes it to grow. The verse is part of Allah's argument demonstrating His complete control over creation and sustenance, refuting any notion that humans possess independent power over the means of their livelihood. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that this rhetorical question is designed to humble the human soul and establish the absolute dependence of mankind upon Allah's will and power.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Al-Waqi'ah, a Meccan chapter that extensively discusses the inevitable Day of Judgment and Allah's supreme power over creation. The broader context (verses 57-73) presents sequential rhetorical questions about fundamental aspects of creation—grain, water, and fire—all designed to awaken the listener's consciousness of divine omnipotence and prepare them for the certainty of the Hereafter.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The best charity is that given when one is in need yet gives, and the best supplication is that made during hardship.' This relates thematically to recognizing Allah's provision (Tirmidhi). Additionally, the hadith: 'Trust in Allah, but tie your camel' (Tirmidhi) complements this ayah by showing that while Allah causes growth, humans must fulfill their duty of planting.
