Transliteration

Thumma innakum ayyuha ad-daallun al-mukadhdhibun

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah addresses the disbelievers and those who have gone astray, emphasizing their denial of the truth and rejection of Allah's signs. The use of 'thumma' (then/moreover) indicates a strong assertion following the previous discussion of the Day of Judgment, serving as a direct rebuke to those who persist in falsehood. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir note that this ayah stresses the deliberate nature of their misguidance—they are not merely ignorant but are active deniers (mukaddhib) of clear proofs.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Waqi'ah is a Meccan surah focused on the certainty of the Day of Judgment and its terrors. This ayah appears in the context of describing the three categories of people on the Day of Judgment, addressing those who rejected the Message during their earthly lives. It serves as a warning and clarification of the fate of those who consciously reject Allah's guidance.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever Allah wishes to guide, He opens their heart to Islam; and whoever He wishes to leave astray, He makes their breast tight and constricted' (Sahih Muslim 2645). Additionally, in Surah Al-Waqi'ah's context, the hadith regarding the three groups on the Day of Judgment reinforces the accountability of deniers (Sahih Bukhari 3344).
