Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the vessels and drinks that will be served to the inhabitants of Paradise, mentioning cups, pitchers, and goblets filled with a pure flowing drink. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that these vessels represent the variety and abundance of provisions in Paradise, with 'ma'īn' (flowing spring) emphasizing the purity and freshness of the divine beverages, which contrast sharply with the impure drinks promised to the inhabitants of Hell mentioned earlier in the surah.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears within the Meccan surah Al-Waqi'ah, which vividly describes the events of the Day of Judgment and the conditions of Paradise and Hell. It comes in a passage detailing the blessings granted to those on the right hand (the righteous), serving as motivation for believers to strive for righteousness during the revelatory period when Mecca's pagans rejected the message of the Hereafter.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said regarding the drinks of Paradise: 'There will be rivers in Paradise, some of wine, some of milk whose taste has not changed, and some of honey.' (Sahih Bukhari 3326). Additionally, Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet described Paradise's waters and beverages as pure and superior to anything in this world.
