Al-Qiyamah · Ayah 10

يَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ ٱلْمَفَرُّ 10

Translations

Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"

Transliteration

Yaqoolu al-insanu yawma-idhin ayna al-mafarru

Tafsir (Explanation)

On the Day of Resurrection, mankind will desperately cry out asking 'Where is the escape?' or 'Where can I flee?' This rhetorical question emphasizes the inescapability of the Day of Judgment and the helplessness of human beings before Allah's divine justice. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi interpret this as depicting the terror and anguish of those who neglected their spiritual obligations, seeking a way to evade accountability but finding none.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears within Surah Al-Qiyamah, which is primarily concerned with describing the horrors and realities of the Day of Resurrection. It comes in a passage detailing mankind's state of panic and desperation on that day. The broader context emphasizes humanity's inability to escape divine judgment through flight, denial, or any other means.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The Day of Judgment will not be established until... people will seek death and will not find it anywhere' (Sahih Muslim 2159). Additionally, 'On the Day of Resurrection, when people see their deeds, some will wish they could flee' (related to the theme in various hadith collections).
