Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah declares that the criminals (those who reject Allah's signs and commit sins) are in profound misguidance and blazing fire. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, 'dalalun' (misguidance) refers to their spiritual blindness and deviation from the straight path, while 'su'ur' (blazing fire/torment) refers to both the torment in this life through confusion and hardship, and the punishment awaiting them in the Hereafter. The verse emphasizes the inevitable consequences of rejecting divine guidance.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Qamar is a Meccan surah that repeatedly warns of severe punishment for those who reject the Message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This ayah appears near the end of the surah as part of its consistent theme emphasizing the fate of disbelievers and rejectors of faith, serving as a powerful conclusion to the warnings presented throughout.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it' (Sahih Bukhari 5027), highlighting the importance of guidance through the Qur'an as opposed to misguidance. Additionally, 'Whoever Allah wishes to guide, He opens his heart to Islam; and whoever He wishes to send astray, He makes his breast tight and constricted' (Sahih Muslim 2645).
