Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to Allah's threat to mark the deniers and blasphemers on their snouts (faces) as a sign of disgrace and punishment. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as either a literal mark in the Hereafter, or metaphorically as the darkening of their faces due to their disbelief and evil deeds, which Allah will make manifest on the Day of Judgment. The snout specifically represents the face and dignity of the person, emphasizing the humiliation awaiting those who reject faith.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Qalam is a Meccan chapter revealed during a period of intense opposition to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This ayah appears in the context of describing the fate of those who deny the signs of Allah and mock the believers. It serves as a warning to the polytheists of Mecca about the inevitable consequences of their arrogance and rejection of monotheism.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The Day of Judgment will not come until the sun rises from the West. When it rises from the West and the people see it, they will all believe, but that will be the time when belief is of no benefit' (Sahih Muslim 157). This relates thematically to the Day of Judgment when all secrets and marks of deeds become apparent.
