Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah pronounces a severe warning of destruction and ruin (wail) upon those who deny and reject the truth on the Day of Judgment. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that this specifically addresses those who knowingly rejected the signs of Allah and the message of the Prophet, particularly those who defrauded others in weights and measures as mentioned in the preceding verses of the surah. The term 'wail' (ويل) denotes a valley in Hell according to some interpretations, or more broadly, expresses divine displeasure and calamity.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Mutaffifin was revealed in Mecca during the early Islamic period, addressing the Meccan merchants and traders who were notorious for cheating customers by giving less in weights and measures while taking full payment. This ayah concludes the description of their despicable behavior and serves as a stern warning of the inevitable punishment awaiting those who persist in denial and fraudulent practices on the Day of Judgment.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The best of you are those with the best character' (Sahih Bukhari 3559), emphasizing honesty as a core Islamic virtue in contrast to the defrauders mentioned in this surah. Additionally, the Prophet warned: 'Whoever cheats us is not from us' (Sahih Muslim 102), directly addressing the sin of deception condemned in Al-Mutaffifin.
