Haatha yawmu al-fasl, jama'naa-kum wa-al-awwaleen
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah announces the Day of Judgment as the Day of Separation (Yawm al-Fasl), when Allah will gather together all of humanity—both the earlier and later generations—for final judgment and reckoning. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi explain that 'al-fasl' (separation) refers to the decisive day when truth is separated from falsehood, the righteous from the wicked, and the inhabitants of Paradise from those of Hell. The gathering of all people across time emphasizes the universality and inevitability of the Day of Judgment.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Mursalat is a Meccan surah revealed during the early period of Prophet Muhammad's mission, primarily addressing Meccan disbelievers who denied resurrection and the afterlife. This ayah appears near the end of the surah as part of a powerful description of the Day of Judgment, serving as a warning and reminder to those who rejected Allah's message.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The people will be gathered on the Day of Judgment barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised' (Sahih Bukhari 3335). Also relevant is the hadith: 'On the Day of Judgment, people will be gathered in three groups: those destined for Paradise, those destined for Hell, and those in between' (Tirmidhi).
