Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah conveys Allah's warning to the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment, commanding them not to be insolent or arrogant on that day, for they will receive no help or support from Allah. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain that this addresses those who denied the truth in the worldly life, emphasizing that their rejection of faith will result in complete abandonment by Allah when they need His aid most. The ayah underscores the futility of disbelief and the certainty of divine justice on the Day of Judgment.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the Meccan surah Al-Mu'minun, which comprehensively addresses the themes of faith, resurrection, and the consequences of denying Allah's signs. The surah was revealed during the period of intense persecution of early Muslims, and this particular ayah contextually follows descriptions of the disbelievers' fate in the afterlife, serving as a stern warning to those who mocked or rejected the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Related Hadiths

The concept is reinforced in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet (peace be upon him) described the Day of Judgment, stating that the disbelievers will wish to return to worldly life but will find no escape. Additionally, Sunan Ibn Majah contains traditions about how the disbelievers will be deprived of divine mercy on that day.

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds believers that arrogance and rejection of faith are ultimately futile, as divine justice is inescapable on the Day of Judgment. Modern readers should reflect on the importance of humility, accepting divine guidance in this life, and recognizing that true security comes only through faith and obedience to Allah, not through worldly power or defiance.
