Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.
Transliteration
Thumma innakum yawma al-qiyamati tubʿathun
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah affirms the certainty of resurrection on the Day of Judgment, emphasizing that after death, all humanity will be raised and brought before Allah for accountability. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari highlight this as a fundamental article of Islamic belief, countering the disbelievers' denial of the afterlife that was prevalent in Meccan society. The particle 'thumma' (then) creates a logical sequence: just as Allah created humans from nothing, He will certainly resurrect them for the final reckoning.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears within Surah Al-Mu'minun's opening section that establishes core Islamic beliefs. It follows verses discussing the creation of humanity and serves to complete the theological narrative—creation is followed inevitably by resurrection. The surah was revealed in Mecca during a period when the Quraysh actively rejected the concept of life after death, making this affirmation particularly significant.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The best of you are those who have the best character and manners,' and regarding resurrection, he emphasized in authentic narrations (Sahih Bukhari) that 'everyone will taste death, and then to us will you be returned.' This hadith reinforces the certainty stated in this ayah.
