Al-Mujadila · Ayah 7

Translations

Have you not considered that Allāh knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? There are not three in a private conversation but that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.

Transliteration

Thumma yunabi'uhum bima 'amilu yawm al-qiyamah. Inna Allaha bikulli shay'in alim.

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah emphasizes Allah's absolute knowledge and omnipresence, declaring that whenever three or more people gather in secret counsel (najwa), Allah is present with them as a witness—and even for groups of two or less. The verse establishes that no secret conversation escapes Allah's knowledge, and all such actions will be revealed and accounted for on the Day of Judgment. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, this serves as a powerful deterrent against evil plotting and a comfort to the believers that Allah witnesses all injustices.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Mujadila is a Medinan chapter addressing the issue of a woman (Khawlah bint Tha'labah) who pleaded her case to the Prophet regarding her husband. The broader context involves regulations about private consultations and secrets. This particular ayah reassures the community that despite private conversations, Allah's knowledge encompasses everything, thus discouraging harmful secret gatherings while encouraging accountability.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever hears some news and conceals it, on the Day of Judgment, Allah will seal his mouth with a seal of fire' (Sunan Abu Dawud). Additionally, the Hadith Qudsi states that Allah said: 'I am as My servant thinks I am, and I am with him when he remembers Me' (Sahih Bukhari), reflecting the theme of divine presence and knowledge.
