Al-Ma'idah · Ayah 18

Translations

But the Jews and the Christians say, "We are the children of Allāh and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created. He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills. And to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and to Him is the [final] destination.

Transliteration

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refutes the false claims of Jews and Christians who believed they held a special status as God's children and beloved ones. The Quran presents a logical rebuttal: if they were truly God's beloved, why would He punish them for their sins? Instead, Allah emphasizes that all humans are merely creatures, and His mercy and punishment depend solely on His divine will and justice. The ayah concludes by affirming Allah's absolute sovereignty over all creation and that all souls will return to Him for final judgment.

Revelation Context

Revealed in Madinah, this ayah is part of Surah Al-Ma'idah's discussion of the People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab). The surah addresses theological disputes with Jewish and Christian communities in Madinah who made exclusive claims to God's favor. The broader context shows the Quran engaging directly with their theological assertions and correcting misconceptions about God's relationship with humanity.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'No one will enter Paradise through his deeds alone.' They asked, 'Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied, 'Not even I, unless Allah covers me with His mercy.' (Sahih Bukhari 5673). This relates to the theme that salvation and divine favor depend on God's grace, not on claims of special lineage.

Key Lesson

No person or community can claim guaranteed salvation or special exemption from divine justice based on lineage or religious identity; all humans stand equal before God and are accountable for their deeds. True closeness to Allah comes through righteous action and submission to His will, not through inherited status or false claims.
