Translations

Transliteration

wa-fasilatu-hu allatee tu'weehi

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to one's family and close relatives who would shelter and protect a person, mentioned in the context of the Day of Judgment when each soul will be concerned only with itself. According to classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, 'fasilah' (فصيلة) means one's clan or family, and 'tu'weehi' means to give shelter or refuge. The verse emphasizes that on the Day of Resurrection, even one's closest family members will not be able to help or provide protection, highlighting the isolation and personal accountability each individual will face.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Al-Ma'arij, a Meccan surah that describes the Day of Judgment and emphasizes the severity of that Day. The broader context discusses how people flee from their loved ones on the Day of Resurrection (70:10-14), stressing that worldly relationships and bonds of kinship will be severed when facing divine judgment, and each person will be preoccupied with their own deeds.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'On the Day of Resurrection, a man will flee from his brother, his mother, his father, his wife, and his children' (Sahih Bukhari, Chapter on Tafsir). This directly relates to the themes of separation and isolation described in this ayah.

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds us that no worldly relationship or status can intercede for us before Allah on the Day of Judgment; therefore, we must focus on righteous deeds in this life and develop a personal relationship with our Creator, as ultimate accountability is individual and not collective.
