Translations
Say, "O disbelievers,
Transliteration
Qul ya ayyuha al-kafirun
Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to directly address the disbelievers with the imperative 'Say, O disbelievers!' This opening establishes a clear and definitive tone for the surah's message of absolute rejection of polytheism and idolatry. Ibn Kathir notes that this direct address serves as a powerful rhetorical device, commanding attention while maintaining clarity in the message of monotheism that follows.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Kafirun was revealed in Mecca during a period when the Quraysh offered the Prophet compromises in his religious practice, attempting to negotiate a middle ground between monotheism and polytheism. This surah was revealed to establish the non-negotiable nature of Islamic belief and to provide the Prophet with a clear response to those who rejected the message of tawhid (monotheism).
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'Whoever recites Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas, it is as though he has recited the Quran' (Tirmidhi). Additionally, Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet was very fond of this surah and would recite it frequently in his night prayers (Sunan Ibn Majah).
