Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to those from the Muslim community who have not yet joined the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the believers—either those who will come after his time or those who had not yet embraced Islam. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this ayah emphasizes that Allah's knowledge and power extend to all generations of believers, even those not yet born, and assures them of their inclusion in the blessing of prophethood. The closing divine attributes, al-'Azeez (the Mighty) and al-Hakeem (the All-Wise), affirm that Allah's decree regarding the ummah is both powerful and perfectly wise.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the context of Surah Al-Jumu'ah (Medinan), which discusses the blessing of the Prophet and the congregation prayer. The ayah is part of a passage (62:2-3) describing how Allah sent His messenger to the unlettered people, and this blessing extends to others from among them who will join the faith later. It reflects the universal nature of the Prophetic message across time.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'The best of people are those of my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them' (Sahih Bukhari 3651). This hadith complements the ayah by acknowledging successive generations of believers while honoring the primary generation.
