Translations

Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into it [i.e., the sea] another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied? Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger.

Am amintum an yu'idakum fīhi tāratan ukhrā fayursila 'alaykum qāsifan min ar-rīḥ fayughriqakum bimā kafaratum, thumma lā tajidū lakum 'alaynā bihī tabī'ā

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah warns the disbelievers against false security, asking if they feel safe that Allah will not send them back to the sea and unleash a destructive wind upon them, drowning them for their ingratitude and disbelief. Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as a warning against arrogance and complacency after witnessing miracles, emphasizing that Divine punishment is always possible for those who reject faith. The ayah concludes by stating they will find no helper or advocate against Allah's punishment.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Al-Isra, a Meccan surah that addresses the polytheists of Mecca. The immediate context (17:66-69) discusses the example of those saved from drowning in the sea—likely referring to Pharaoh's army—and uses this as a reminder of Divine power and the consequences of disbelief. The surah emphasizes Allah's absolute authority and the certainty of the Final Day.

Related Hadiths

While no specific hadith directly addresses this verse, the concept relates to Hadith Qudsi where Allah warns against ingratitude: 'The most grievous sin is when a slave attributes partners to Me, though I have created him' (Sahih Bukhari). Additionally, hadiths about the punishment of those who reject divine signs after witnessing them are thematically related.
