وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ 5

Translations

And has listened [i.e., responded] to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] -

Transliteration

Wa-adhinet li-rabbihā wa-huqqat

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the earth's obedience and submission to its Lord on the Day of Judgment, when it will be split asunder and leveled. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, 'listened' (adhinet) signifies the earth's acknowledgment and compliance with Allah's command, while 'huqqat' means it will be made level or stripped of all its features. The verse emphasizes that all creation, even the earth itself, will fulfill its appointed purpose and respond to Allah's will in the final hour.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Al-Inshiqaq, a Meccan surah that focuses on the cosmic upheaval and events of the Day of Judgment. The surah begins with the description of the sky splitting apart (inshiqaq), and this verse continues the theme by describing the earth's transformation and submission to Allah's command on that momentous day.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said regarding the Day of Judgment: 'The earth will shine with the light of its Lord' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). Additionally, Surah Az-Zalzalah 99:1-2 complements this theme: 'When the earth is shaken with its earthquake. And the earth discharges its burdens' (Sahih Muslim context).

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds us that all of creation, even the earth beneath our feet, is subservient to Allah's will and shall obey His commands. It should inspire believers to recognize their own obligation to submit to Allah's guidance, just as the earth itself will submit on the Day of Judgment.
