Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah affirms that in the destruction of the people of Lot (mentioned in the preceding verses) there is indeed a clear sign for the believers. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that the fate of those who rejected Allah's messengers and engaged in abominable deeds serves as a warning and proof of Allah's justice and power. The ayah underscores that believers who reflect upon such historical accounts recognize divine intervention and the consequences of disobedience.
Revelation Context
This ayah concludes the narrative of Lot's people (Surah Al-Hijr, verses 61-77) in a Meccan surah revealed during the early period of Islam. The context addresses the Meccan disbelievers by drawing parallels to ancient nations destroyed for their rejection of truth, reinforcing the certainty of divine punishment and the importance of heeding the Messenger's warning.
Related Hadiths
The hadith recorded in Surah Al-Haqqah (69:9-10) parallels this theme: 'So when the inevitable Day comes, the disbelievers will not be able to deny it.' Additionally, Surah Al-A'raf (7:136) relates that believers take lessons from the stories of destroyed nations: 'We seized each people for their sins.'
