Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah is part of the dialogue between Prophet Lot (Lut) and the people of Sodom, where he urges them to fear Allah and not to shame him by persisting in their immoral behavior. Ibn Kathir explains that Lot is appealing to their sense of honor and piety, reminding them that disgracing a messenger of Allah is a grave transgression. Al-Qurtubi emphasizes that this represents the prophetic approach of combining the call to piety (taqwa) with an appeal to human dignity and social shame as deterrents to sin.
Revelation Context
This ayah occurs within the narrative of Surah Al-Hijr (verses 61-79), which recounts the story of Lot's people and their rejection of his message against homosexuality and lewdness. The context is Lot's desperate plea to his community as they approached the houses of his guests (the angels), highlighting the culminating moment of his preaching efforts before Allah's punishment.
Related Hadiths
Sahih Muslim 2657: The Prophet (ﷺ) said regarding the people of Lot, 'The worst of people are those who commit the action of the people of Lot.' This hadith connects to the severity of the sin Lot's people committed and reinforces the ayah's context.

Key Lesson
Believers should recognize that fearing Allah and maintaining moral integrity protect both personal honor and community welfare; ignoring prophetic guidance and persisting in sin leads to humiliation in this life and punishment in the next.
