Tafsir (Explanation)

The angels respond to Lot's worry by reassuring him that they have come to him with the truth regarding that which his people were in doubt about—namely, the destruction of the people of Sodom. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari note that the angels are clarifying their divine mission to eliminate the doubt and disbelief that characterized the Sodomite community, providing Lot with certainty and comfort in his trial.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within the narrative of Prophet Lot and his people in Surah Al-Hijr. The context describes the angels' arrival at Lot's house; initially Lot was worried about their safety among his transgressive people, but the angels reveal their true purpose and divine authority to execute Allah's judgment against those who persisted in moral corruption and rejected the truth.

While no single hadith directly quotes this verse, the broader narrative of Lot's people relates to Sahih Bukhari's accounts of the destruction of the people of Lot (Qawm Lut) as a punishment for their deviation from divine guidance, mentioned in various ahadith concerning the signs of the Hour and past nations.
