Translations

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allāh, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Transliteration

Sabbaha lillahi ma fi as-samawati wa ma fi al-ard, wa huwa al-Azizu al-Hakim

Tafsir (Explanation)

This opening ayah of Surah Al-Hashr declares that all creation in the heavens and earth glorifies Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala), exalting Him beyond all imperfection. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir explain that this tasbih (glorification) is both explicit—through the speech of those with intellect—and implicit, as the very existence and order of creation testifies to Allah's perfection. The surah then emphasizes that Allah is Al-Aziz (the Mighty/Invincible) and Al-Hakim (the All-Wise), attributes that are demonstrated in His handling of worldly affairs, particularly the exile of Banu Nadir as narrated in the surah's context.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Hashr was revealed in Medina following the expulsion of Banu Nadir, a Jewish tribe, in the year 4 AH. This opening ayah sets the theological framework for understanding divine justice and wisdom in the events described, emphasizing that all of creation acknowledges Allah's sovereignty regardless of human rebellion or transgression.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Everything glorifies Allah, but you do not understand their glorification' (Sahih Muslim 2794). Additionally, the famous hadith in Sahih Bukhari (3191) describes the Prophet hearing the tasbih of food while eating, illustrating the constant glorification of creation mentioned in this ayah.

It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allāh; but [the decree of] Allāh came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision.

59:7Al-Hashr

And what Allāh restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allāh and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the needy and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.

59:19Al-Hashr

And be not like those who forgot Allāh, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.

59:8Al-Hashr

For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allāh and [His] approval and supporting [the cause of] Allāh and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.
