Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes Allah's reward for the believers who combine faith with righteous deeds: entry into Paradise with rivers flowing beneath it, adorned with gold bracelets and pearls, and clothed in silk. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that these are descriptions of spiritual and physical pleasures tailored to human comprehension, representing both the material and immaterial blessings of Paradise. Al-Qurtubi notes that the combination of faith (iman) and righteous actions (amal salih) is essential—neither is sufficient alone—reflecting the Quranic principle that belief must be accompanied by good deeds.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Hajj is a Medinan surah revealed during the period when the Muslim community was facing opposition and persecution. This ayah appears in a section emphasizing the ultimate triumph and reward of the faithful, providing encouragement to believers facing hardship. The description of Paradise's luxuries serves as motivation for perseverance in faith and obedience.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'For every believer in Paradise there is a palace made of pearls, and within it are rooms of gold and silver.' (Tirmidhi). Additionally, regarding the reward of righteous deeds, the Prophet stated: 'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good words or remain silent.' (Sahih Bukhari 6018).

Key Lesson

True success in the afterlife requires both sincere belief in Allah and consistent righteous action—faith without deeds is incomplete, and deeds without faith are hollow. For contemporary believers, this serves as a reminder that spiritual aspirations must be grounded in practical obedience to Allah's commands and ethical conduct in daily life.
