Tafsir (Explanation)

The believers, faced with Pharaoh's persecution, declare that their only 'crime' is believing in Allah's signs when they came to them. They then supplicate to Allah for patience and to grant them death as Muslims (in submission to Him). This ayah exemplifies the steadfastness of faith despite worldly oppression, and Ibn Kathir notes that this prayer reflects the believers' acceptance of their fate while seeking divine assistance and a righteous death.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within the narrative of the magicians of Pharaoh who witnessed Musa's miracles and believed in Allah, facing severe punishment from Pharaoh as a result. The broader surah discusses the consequences of rejecting divine guidance, and this passage illustrates the believers' resolute faith amid trial and their submission to Allah's will.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever dies while being sincere to Allah and His Messenger will be among the righteous' (Musnad Ahmad). Additionally, the theme of seeking death as a Muslim reflects the hadith: 'Let none of you wish for death; if he must wish, let him say: O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is good for me, and take me when death is good for me' (Sahih Muslim 2680).
