خُلِقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مِنْ عَجَلٍ ۚ سَأُو۟رِيكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِى فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُونِ 37

Man was created of haste [i.e., impatience]. I will show you My signs [i.e., vengeance], so do not impatiently urge Me.

Transliteration

Khuliqal-insanu min ajal. Sa-uurikum ayatee fala tastajilun.

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah highlights humanity's inherent nature of hastiness and impatience (ajal), which was created as part of human disposition. Allah reassures the believers that He will show them His signs and miracles, but commands them not to be hasty or impatient in demanding proof, as divine wisdom operates according to Allah's perfect timing, not human urgency. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir explain this as addressing the Quraysh's demands for immediate miracles, while Al-Tabari notes it reflects the general human tendency toward impatience in matters of faith and provision.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Al-Anbiya, which was revealed in Mecca and discusses various prophets and divine signs. The context reflects the Meccan period when disbelievers repeatedly demanded immediate miraculous proofs from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), challenging him with impatience. This ayah serves as a divine response to such demands, reminding believers that Allah's plan unfolds according to His wisdom, not human expectations.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Haste is from Shaytan, and patience is from Allah' (Tirmidhi). Additionally, in Sahih Bukhari, the Prophet emphasized patience, saying: 'The best of you are those who are patient' (Hadith on patience and virtue).

Key Lesson

Believers should recognize that impatience is a natural human weakness but must consciously cultivate patience and trust in Allah's timeline for answering prayers and revealing His signs. Rather than demanding immediate gratification or proof, we should have faith that Allah will fulfill His promises according to His infinite wisdom and perfect timing.
