Qāla Rabbi ihkum bil-haqq, wa rabbunā ar-rahmānu al-musta'ānu 'alā mā tasfūn
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah presents the Prophet's supplication calling upon Allah to judge with truth between him and his denying people, while affirming that Allah is ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful) and al-Musta'ān (the One upon whom reliance is placed). According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this represents the Prophet's patient appeal to divine justice against the false accusations and disbelief of the Quraysh, demonstrating trust in Allah's ultimate judgment despite their rejection. The ayah emphasizes that despite the people's lies and false attributes ascribed to Allah, believers should rely solely upon the Merciful One for vindication and support.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears near the end of Surah Al-Anbiya, which chronicles various prophets and their struggles against their peoples' disbelief. It reflects the broader Meccan context where Prophet Muhammad faced intense persecution and rejection from the Quraysh, and serves as an encouragement for him and the believers to maintain faith and seek Allah's judgment rather than despair at human opposition.
Related Hadiths
The concept of reliance upon Allah (tawakkul) is extensively covered in hadith collections. See Sunan At-Tirmidhi where the Prophet said, 'Whoever trusts in Allah, He will suffice him.' Additionally, Sahih Bukhari records the Prophet's instruction to trust in Allah while taking practical means, reflecting the balance shown in this ayah.

Key Lesson
When facing injustice or false accusations, believers should appeal to Allah's justice with certainty that He is the Most Merciful and the ultimate source of support, rather than relying on worldly power or becoming disheartened. This teaches us that vindication comes through trust in Allah's wisdom and timing, not through despair or compromise of truth.
