Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to one who commands others toward taqwa (God-consciousness and piety). Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi interpret this in the context of the surah's discussion of the servant who prays and worships—emphasizing that true faith manifests not only in personal devotion but in calling others toward righteousness. This verse highlights the importance of enjoining good and promoting piety within society.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-'Alaq was the first surah revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and addresses the fundamentals of faith and worship. Verse 12 appears within a section contrasting the righteous believer with the heedless denier, illustrating how the believer's faith extends to guiding others toward taqwa.
