Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah promises that Allah will reform and rectify the deeds of those who obey Him and His Messenger, and will forgive their sins. The clause 'whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed achieved a great victory' emphasizes that true success (falah) lies in obedience to Allah and the Prophet, not in worldly gains. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi note that this verse combines both divine mercy (forgiveness) and divine assistance (reformation of deeds), indicating that Allah facilitates righteous conduct for the obedient.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the context of Surah Al-Ahzab, which was revealed after the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwat al-Khandaq) during the Medinan period. The surah addresses various matters of Islamic jurisprudence and the believers' conduct during times of trial. This particular verse encapsulates the general principle that obedience to Allah and His Messenger leads to divine assistance and ultimate success.

Additionally, Jundub ibn Abdullah reported that the Prophet said: 'Whoever among you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand; if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; if he is not able to do so, then with his heart' (Sahih Muslim 49), relating to the fruits of obedience.
