Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to the trial (fitnah) faced by the believers during the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwat al-Khandaq) in 5 AH, when the combined forces of Quraysh and their allies besieged Medina. The believers were severely shaken and tested in their faith, experiencing great fear and hardship, as Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain. The word 'zilzālan' (earthquake) is used metaphorically to describe the intensity of their trial and the violent shaking of their hearts with anxiety, though some scholars also interpret it as including literal disturbance of the earth.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Al-Ahzab, which was revealed after the Battle of the Trench. The entire surah addresses the events of that siege, when the Meccan coalition and their allies (the Confederates) surrounded Medina with approximately 10,000 warriors against the Muslims' smaller force. The believers faced an unprecedented test of their resolve, supplies, and morale during this prolonged siege.

Related Hadiths

Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that during the Battle of the Trench, the Muslims dug a trench and faced severe cold and hunger. Anas ibn Malik reported that the believers' faith was so tested that some doubted, and this ayah addresses that specific moment of trial (Jami' at-Tirmidhi).

Key Lesson
