Transliteration
Wa inna ad-dīna la-wāqi'un
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah asserts with certainty that the Day of Judgment (ad-din) shall inevitably occur. The word 'wāqi'un' (falling, descending, inevitable) emphasizes the absolute certainty of this event. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as Allah's emphatic affirmation that despite the disbelievers' denial, the Day of Judgment is as certain as a falling object—it will definitely happen without fail.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Adh-Dhariyat, a Meccan chapter addressing the denial of the Resurrection by the Quraysh. The surah uses various oaths and examples from creation to convince the Arabs of Allah's power and the certainty of the Hereafter. This ayah directly confronts the mockers and deniers of the Day of Judgment.
Related Hadiths
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 'The Hour will be established and not a single soul will be left on the Earth' (Sahih Muslim). Additionally, 'By Him in Whose Hand is my life, the Day of Judgment is as certain as the night follows the day' (Tirmidhi).
