[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

Transliteration

Qala fama khatbukum ayyuha al-mursalun

Tafsir (Explanation)

Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asks the angels who have arrived at his home, 'What is your business or mission?' This question reveals Ibrahim's initial uncertainty about their nature and purpose, though he had already shown them hospitality. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this inquiry demonstrates proper etiquette in seeking clarification, and Ibrahim's directness reflects his character as a messenger who was unafraid to question and seek understanding.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within the narrative of Ibrahim's encounter with the angels sent to deliver the glad tidings of Ishaq's birth and to announce the destruction of the people of Lut. The surah is Meccan and emphasizes divine signs and the consequences of rejecting messengers. This particular exchange shows Ibrahim's wisdom in testing the visitors despite their apparent righteousness.
