Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the Day of Judgment when the people of Hell will be tried and tested in the fire. According to classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, 'yuftanun' (they will be tried/tested) refers to the severe punishment and burning they experience in Hell as a consequence of their disbelief and sins. The ayah emphasizes that this trial is not merely physical torment but a test of their reality and the consequences of their choices in the worldly life.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Adh-Dhariyat, a Meccan surah that repeatedly emphasizes themes of resurrection, accountability, and divine justice. It follows the rhetorical question to the disbelievers about the reality of the Day of Judgment, serving as a warning about the inevitable consequences awaiting those who reject faith and divine guidance.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The fire will be brought on the Day of Judgment, and it will be said to it, 'Have you consumed every obstinate disbeliever?' And it will say, 'Yes.'' (Sahih Muslim 2844). This hadith corroborates the Quranic description of Hell's role in punishing disbelievers.
