The Arabic root م-ع-ي (m-'-y) relates to intestines, bowels, or internal organs, particularly the digestive tract. In its Quranic occurrence, it appears in Surah Muhammad (47:15) describing the punishment in Hell where disbelievers are given boiling water to drink that cuts or tears their intestines (amʿāʾ).
