The Arabic root جيب (j-y-b) refers to a pocket, opening, or the bosom/chest area of a garment, specifically the neck or breast opening. In the Quran, it appears most notably in verses commanding modest dress, where believers are instructed to draw their head coverings over their bosoms (juyub, plural of jayb), emphasizing the covering of the chest area. The root also appears in the story of Moses, where he is told to place his hand in his bosom (jayb) and withdraw it as a miraculous sign, demonstrating both the literal meaning of a garment opening and its use in a divine context.
