Description

The Arabic root ḥ-ṭ-b (حطب) fundamentally means dry wood or firewood used for burning. In the Quran, it appears most notably in Surah al-Masad (111:4-5), where the wife of Abu Lahab is described as a carrier of firewood (ḥaṭab), symbolizing her role in fueling hostility against the Prophet and serving as fuel for her own punishment in Hell. The root conveys both the literal meaning of combustible wood and the metaphorical significance of that which intensifies fire and destruction.
