The Arabic root ḥ-r-ḍ (حرض) carries the core meaning of intense urging, incitement, or being consumed and worn down to the point of exhaustion or near-death. In the Quran, it appears in contexts where believers are commanded to incite one another to battle or righteous action, and also describes a state of being utterly consumed by grief or longing to the point of fatal illness, as seen in Prophet Jacob's description when mourning Joseph.
